This was filmed in 1973, the year after I married and moved to York. It was when much more careful attention began to be paid to the physical remains of this 2,000-year-old city — mainly influenced by the first archaeologist interviewed here.

I know both the archaeologists in the film. They're still around, but 48 years older, like me, though it doesn't seem all that long ago. 'Blue Peter' is a children's TV programme.

I'm curious to know how many white males have been 'accidentally' shot with a gun by 'law enforcement' officers, who 'intended' to use a taser. Anyone know? Also, why are tasers designed to look and feel like guns?

And while we're on the subject, why do these officers automatically reach for deadly force when pulling someone up for a minor violation of some local traffic law? Who are the real criminals here and who allows them to become police officers?

To [livejournal.com profile] duckys_lady - thank you very much for the virtual gift on my birthday!

Whatever my views about the monarchy, the death of Prince Philip today, a couple of months short of his 100th birthday, is quite sad. He has been part of the background of British lives since 1947 when he married the Queen (whom he had known since 1939).

I often saw him in Cambridge, where he was Chancellor of the University, and when he came to open the new library at the college where I was working, I had to meet him and talk to him about the new online catalogue. It was an entertaining exchange but my chief memory is that even at 77 he was the handsomest man I had ever met, — but a very, very tough cookie with it.

And saw this host of golden daffodils this morning under the city walls of York. (Sorry about the quality — my phone isn't brilliant at photos). Unusually warm weather  brought by the jetstream has brought out all the blossom. Unfortunately we are promised a return to winter later this week as the jetstream moves on and brings an Arctic blast to kill it all...

The weather is warming, thanks to the jet stream which is bringing heat from North Africa — positively tropical at about 12C. From being frozen in their pot recently, these have come out suddenly. Everything else is holding out for higher temperatures.

For [livejournal.com profile] jantojones. These scenes of daily life in early 20th century China are over a hundred years old, so I donated them to Durham University's Oriental Museum. They were probably brought back from Shanghai by my Great Uncle on a visit home in 1906. He lived in Shanghai, working for a tea merchant, from about 1905-1937 when he was killed in the Japanese invasion.

They are mostly around 6-8cm tall

The ones at the back are scenes of torture! The books are his diaries. from about 1906

These are tiny pipeclay figurines (all-too-easily damaged, sadly)

(as Edmund Burke said)... Is for good people to do nothing.

Watching the impeachment trial from the UK, I was impressed by the quality of the rhetoric on the part of some very gifted, intelligent people in Congress. It made a pleasant change from what we listen to from the halfwits in the UK parliament.

The impeachment managers made an unanswerable case against a man with no redeeming qualities.
So yesterday's vote was a travesty.

I got my first vaccination this afternoon at York's Mass Vaccination site. The invitation to book came in the post yesterday, I applied online, and got a slot for this afternoon immediately — not that the timing mattered because you're dealt with as soon as you arrive. It took just five minutes, thoughin all the trip took an hour and a half  because I went by bus and had to walk half a mile or so for a choice of buses.

But hooray! I hope it's a start towards a slightly less stressful existence. My second jab is booked for May Day.

My husband, aged 85, received his first Covid vaccination this morning at a mass vaccination centre in York (UK). We have no car, so he used a local volunteer service called York Wheels to get him there which cost a relatively small amount compared with a taxi — it's only about five miles away, but it's several degrees below and very icy underfoot, and who wants to use public transport?

His driver, though younger, was apparently an elderly fusspot — my husband is far from gaga or elderly, I'm glad to say — and insisted on accompanying him every step of the way, even into the vacc centre where it was crowded and social distancing impossible. However, he got his jab and and was brought home. The second one is booked for sometime in April. Sadly, I'm not eligible for another two or three months, till after my 70th birthday, but it's a start! Until a new variant proves resilient to the vaccination...

If you gave (...?) an enema, s/he could be buried in a matchbox. Who would you nominate?

[Originally said of Jerry Falwell, by the British journalist, Christopher Hitchens]

America is said to be a Christian country, but appears to be more Old Testament than New - not really concerned with the teachings of Christ, or how does it justify this?
A black man on death row is put to death after 20 years. Is the cold-blooded killing of a repentant criminal the way a civilised country should behave - even towards people who have been involved in murder? Does matching evil with evil make the executioners and those who ordered it worse criminals? Is the state-sponsored killing spree, now embarked upon, justice deferred, or obscene and unnecessary vengeance?

Covid vaccinations started this morning in England with a woman of 90, but coming in second was one William 'Bill' Shakespeare. He's 81, in hospital in Coventry, but he comes from Warwickshire, his namesake's country. Nice one.
